What is a nonogram?
A nonogram is part logic puzzle and part paint-by-numbers. Solve the clues correctly and a little picture emerges square by square.
Reading the clues
Each row and column of a nonogram has a set of numbers. Those numbers list the lengths of the filled runs in that line, in order, with at least one gap between runs. A clue of 3 1 means a block of three filled squares, a gap, then a single filled square.
One logical answer
A proper nonogram never needs guessing. By cross-checking what each row clue and column clue allow, you can always deduce the next square with certainty. That single logical solution is what makes it a true logic puzzle rather than a gamble.
A picture at the end
Nonograms took off in Japan in the late 1980s, and the payoff is the reveal: the finished grid shows a small image. That reward makes them oddly relaxing, and they print beautifully too, as our printable puzzles page shows.

How do you solve nonograms?
Solve nonograms with logic, never guesses. Start with lines whose clues nearly fill the row, using the overlap trick to fill guaranteed squares. Mark squares you know are blank, then cross-check rows against columns. Repeat, and the certain squares snowball into a full solution.
What is a logic puzzle?
A logic puzzle is any challenge you solve by pure reasoning rather than luck or reflexes. You start with a set of rules and clues, then work out the one arrangement that fits every rule. Nonograms, Lights Out and Tower of Hanoi are classic examples.
Can I print these puzzles?
Yes, our printable puzzles page has puzzles like word searches and nonograms you can print and solve with a pencil. They are perfect for travel, classrooms or any time you want a break from screens. Printing is free like everything else here.
